"Go for a Walk" Activity
My experience using "new eyes" begins as soon as I step foot on the train station I get on to ride to college, this one being the Martinez Nadal station. My unlimited pass card had just expired, so I have to buy a new limited use card. Three out of four machines work, but two of those three working ones have "use exact change" signs, so me having a five dollar bill, and only in need for a 3 dollar pass, I use the one that will return those extra bucks. In this station, there used to be a working Subway (the fast food sandwich restaurant, although ironic considering we were at a subway). It is currently closed, however, with a large metal curtain, and on it there's a note that explains it's closed due to electrical issues. I begin to miss the daily specials of this Subway. It's 8am. and there's a lot of action going on with the security and employees behind the counter, there being two guards and 4 employees, three laughing at the counter and one coming out of the bathroom. This is pretty unusual, since during this hour there's regularly one employee and sometimes even no guard. But I don't give it too much thought; I ponder more on the consistency of how slow the passenger activity is at this hour. Is it because most of the population already clocked in around 7am? Is it also because students enrolled in later classes? Well, students or people around my age are the least I see at this time. I get in the last train cart and notice that most passengers are middle aged or older. Nothing out of the ordinary, it's really quiet and I'm the only one standing. I don't think it's odd but I always get looks, maybe because there are free seats available and I still prefer to sit. But this time I felt peer pressure from these looks since I was trying to be so observative this time around, so I chose a seat. There's one specific passenger that catches my eye. He seems too old for the clothes and accessories he's wearing, kind of a Rob Dyrdek scenario (in the least offensive way). Most passengers get off in the "Centro Medico" stop and only some students stick around. No one gets in the kart I ride on, which is the furthest to the stop entrance to "Cupey" and "Rio Piedras" but I chose this one all the time cause conveniently it's the closest to the exit I take near my classrooms. The train conductor felt slightly funny and cracked a couple of jokes as we stopped in " Universidad". And here my final stop arrives. As I get off, the conductor opens his window and looks at the passengers that just got off expecting a reaction to his jokes. I've heard them before so I just continue walking to my class.
Hi Miguel! As I read your post I could imagine myself in the train as well, surrounded by people of all ages and laughing at the conductor's jokes. Great post!

I felt a little bad for the conductor. I would have at least offered him a smile, but I digress. You are very descriptive in your writing. I could almost see the subway myself!
ResponderEliminarHello, I felt if i was there with you, never noticed the details in the train station, also I didn't know there was a Subway(restaurant) in the station. Good post!
